Apply for a Canadian Passport 2026: New Fees & 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee
If you need to apply for a Canadian passport in 2026, timing is everything. For the first time in over a decade, the Government of Canada is transitioning to an annual inflation-linked fee structure. Simultaneously, a new “Service Guarantee” is launching to ensure you aren’t left waiting for months.
Whether you are applying from within Canada or from abroad (including our clients in Cameroon), here are the critical updates for March 2026.
1. URGENT: Fee Increase on March 31, 2026
To beat the price hike, your application must be received by Passport Canada before March 31. Applications received on or after this date will be subject to the new annual inflation adjustment.
| Passport Type (Adult 16+) | Current Fee (Until March 30) | New Fee (From March 31) |
| 10-Year (Applying in Canada) | $160.00 | $163.50 |
| 5-Year (Applying in Canada) | $120.00 | $122.50 |
| 10-Year (Applying Abroad) | $260.00 | $266.25 |
| 5-Year (Applying Abroad) | $190.00 | $194.25 |
2. The 30-Day “Money-Back” Guarantee
Starting April 1, 2026, the Government of Canada is introducing a landmark accountability measure. If a complete passport application is not processed within 30 business days, the service fee will be refunded to the applicant.
- Partial Refunds: Applications delayed by 1-10 days beyond the standard may receive a 25% refund.
- Full Refunds: Delays exceeding 10 days beyond the standard qualify for a 100% refund.
- Note: This does not include mailing time, only the processing period once all documents are verified.
3. How to Apply: 2026 Requirements
To apply for a Canadian passport successfully, you must provide:
- Proof of Citizenship: Original birth certificate or Canadian Citizenship Certificate.
- Identity Document: A valid government-issued ID with your name, photo, and signature.
- Two Photos: Must be taken within the last 6 months. One must be signed by your Guarantor.
- Guarantor & References: You need a guarantor (who has known you for 2+ years and holds a valid Canadian passport) and two references who are not relatives.
4. Applying from Abroad
For Canadians in West Africa, applications are handled via the High Commission of Canada in Yaoundé.
- Processing: Standard abroad processing is 20 business days (plus courier time).
- Emergency Travel: If you have an urgent flight, contact the High Commission directly for a Temporary Passport (8-page document valid for up to 1 year).
- Payment: Fees for abroad applications must be paid online via the official IRCC portal before submission.
How Mercurial Global Passport Simplifies Your Application
The most common reason for rejection is an invalid guarantor or a photo that doesn’t meet biometric standards. At Mercurial Global Passport, we provide:

- Document Services: We assist in obtaining certified true copies or translations for foreign-issued supporting documents via our Diploma Shop platform.
- Yaoundé Liaison: Helping Canadian expats in Cameroon navigate local requirements for a seamless submission at the High Commission.
